What is ‘Ohana?
The ancient Hawaiian term ‘ohana means family, but probably not in the way you typically use it. 'Ohana speaks to the concept of a larger family that is not necessarily connected by blood. A person’s ‘ohana can include their best friends, neighbors, or anyone else who is special in their life.
An ‘ohana is special. The people within it are bound together by genuine compassion, culture, support, loyalty, and love for one another. To become a part of someone’s ‘ohana is a great honor.
In today’s world we can become social media “friends” with everyone we meet, but when genuine and deep friendships are becoming increasingly rare, the beauty and value of the ‘ohana becomes even more obvious. Study after study confirms that humans are social creatures that long for companionship and community. Within an ‘ohana, you are never isolated or alone.

Our Vision
We’re building, managing, and maintaining multiple, permanently attainable communities where residents care about each other and our planet. We develop diverse (age, gender, and income), self governing, eco-positive, smoke free, drug free, violence free, friendly communities beginning on Kauai.
Our Mission
To build and manage in perpetuity, nonprofit, eco-positive, regenerative rental housing and commercial property, showing what happens when we collectively hold an intention to live for the good of the Whole.

Why?
We need a different structure for living. The ever-rising cost to purchase a home, rent an apartment, or lease commercial space has resulted in over-crowded living conditions, houselessness, and business displacements. We have record profits for investors and banks. As the “market” improves (up 37.5% in Hawaii for 2021), rents go up, the houseless population increases, and store owners go out of business. The resulting stress leads to illness, crime, income disparity, loss of dignity, and a host of other social issues.
Livingry should recognize and enhance each person’s sense of dignity. When we are near or at that place of losing our home or our place of business, we encounter a deep sense of helplessness. Too many people are finding themselves in this situation. Others are waking up to the reality that to ever own a home is forever out of reach. Just keeping up with rising rents means never catching up or getting ahead financially.
We all deserve dignity. To achieve this, we need a different structure: a nonprofit, regenerative living solution.
How?
By vertically integrating the construction process under our nonprofit structure. Using construction materials from industrial hemp fiber along with 3D house building technology allows us to reduce the end cost an estimated 50%. We build permanently attainable communities (approx. 150 people each) of rental apartments and commercial properties owned and managed by the foundation in perpetuity.
We currently have a growing list of over 20 construction projects here on Kauai.
We welcome grants and financial contributions. We accept donations of land and low/no interest lines of credit. The rental community repays the cost of construction and lines of credit over a 20-year cycle so we continue building more and more communities.

Your Legacy
In perpetuity. Your contribution of land, money and/or no-interest line of credit begins a 20-year cycle of building more communities in perpetuity. A portion of every rental dollar goes to repay the regenerative fund so we can build additional communities at least every 20 years, forever.
Your legacy can also be activated by introducing us to people and organizations with the heart and resources to support nonprofit, eco-positive, permanently attainable, community solutions.

‘Ohana Legacy Foundation, a 501C3, is using nonprofit capitalism to create whole systems alternatives for the world’s biggest problems. We strive to be an example of how business can use profit as a tool (instead of an end goal) to be a force for Good in our interdependent world. We strive to embody “For the Good of the Whole” in every decision.
We are a DBA of Good of the Whole, Inc (EIN: 83-1033918) founded in 2012. Good of the Whole members believe that we are whole beings contributing to, and in service of, a greater whole. We share a strong awareness of cultural and planetary issues and are committed to creating whole systems alternatives for the world’s biggest problems.
